The Rippits quilting club
Club history provided by Connie Brannon
In 1999, a small group of ladies went to a quilt show in Oakhurst. They were Helen Levashoff, Marlene White, Diane McDonough and Connie Brannon. When they arrived back home, Helen said, “That looks easy. We can do that!“
We went out and purchased a quilt book titled, “Quilt in a Day." To our surprise, it did not mean we could quilt this in a day.
We then met monthly at Helen’s house and tried to make the first block which we subsequently threw away. Helen said she knew a lady that could help us. Her name was Gladys Cannon. She became a great teacher.
Gladys said we needed to go shopping (yeah) for fabric. She taught us that we needed to find fabric that we liked, it would be the focal fabric and from that fabric we chose other fabrics that would compliment it. This was a daunting task, but we made it through.
Gladys helped us make several different squares while at Helen’s. The word got out the some ladies were having fun at Helen’s house making quilts. Soon there were too many for Helen’s house, so she call the YLOA office and asked if we could use the Fireside Room. They agreed.
Since that time our group has helped cover the Blue Heron’s chairs in the dining room, made some drapes that separate the Fireside Room and also help stuff packets for YLOA. We also make 1 or 2 quilts for the raffle at our Boutique in November.
Because we were a quilting group and made lots of mistakes, Helen named our group the RIPPITS.
If you are interested in quilting, crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, etc., we meet Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Clubhouse.
